Interesting post…I agree with you regarding your assessment of Good to Great…one thing that is funny is that several of the companies who were ‘great’ in the book have suffered a great deal, like Circuit City and Fannie Mae…not that he could have predicted it, but its just interesting…I’d rather be Good than out of business!

I like the 80/20 rule, but I don’t like to get pigeonholed in a black or white scenario…with your definitions, it seems like lead should take the forefront, until the systems/processes are in place to help serve…but I think one great aspect of leadership that you are missing is dealing with things that come up quickly, those NOW items that need quick resolution or new innovation–its service to members and its leadership to solve immediate pain or problems for them…

I believe it starts with the tradeshow owners and organizers. They are the primary ones that need to find their new tradeshow mojo. They need to start by setting goals to be innovative, different, unique and memorable.

Where can they find their new tradeshow mojo? It’s not by attending the same old events they’ve always experienced. They need to go to shows that are not in their industry. They should visit gaming conferences to see how they are getting attendees and exhibitors involved. They should consider large state fairs and amusement parks. Look outside the hospitality industry for new ideas and creativity. Don’t get stuck with the way things were always done in the past.

I did sit in a couple of breakout sessions that were severely hamstrung by over-reliance on the internet. One in particular included sound; the speaker essentially bent over to put her lapel microphone next to the laptop speaker. Not good.

I’ve seen Twitter feedback work well, but I think someone other than a speaker or panelist needs to monitor the stream. Certainly doing the housekeeping up front is a common courtesy.

When you said, “we will never truly understand the forces at play when a group of committed, passionate people get together,” I realized it was that lack of understanding that can not only be frustrating but unfufilling. After all, I’ve put in my time and energy expecting certain results. Thanks for offering the hope that we can build on the energy and assets of committee members and their talents, ideas and skills. Looking back, we actually did get quite a lot accomplished, the group members worked together well and the idea sharing was well done. I’m smiling now.

Re #1: Virtual events – When it comes to digital learning, participants want to be engaged just like they are when they are on the internet.

Taking a talking head to video and live streaming or playing a recording of them is not enough. Participants want to be able to fast forward parts, text-chat with others during the session to discuss, participate in polls, ask live questions and get immediate responses from moderators, etc. From my experience, participants of virtual meetings don’t want to be an avatar, sit in a room with other avatars and together watch a live stream video…unless there is some form of engagement. Dr. Bryon Reeves book Engagement speaks to this issue very well.

So when thinking about hybrid or virtual events, think engagement strategies as well!
